A reader’s thoughts

Dear Strewth,
As a follower and reader of your sight I just would like to say thanks for offering readers an insight into the upcoming election and you have developed a following of non Fraser Coast people.
If I may comment there are a now a few hands going up of people who have the skills required to manage  this community at last I may add…..we now just need a few more and we will be on the right track.
We have the following people:

  1. Still Waiting same as frasercoastbarfly
  2. Darryl Stewart
  3. Lance Stone
  4. Still Waiting same as frasercoastbarfly
  5. Still Waiting same as frasercoastbarfly
  6. Trevor Mc Donald
  7. Daren Everard
  8. Now this is my area and god help me if i have to vote for any of this lot!
  9. Do we go old or new……..not my area but I am thinking new just not sure who!
  10. Still Waiting same as frasercoastbarfly must agree with AndrewG a person who wants a supermarket and to save shopping trollies who had Macca as his old boss he is joking!
I think we have a base of 4 so it is only 6 to go, as the frasercoastbarfly has written about Div 7 I” believe this division is fortunate to have at least one decent candidate put their hand up already for the next election – Darren Everard. He is full of ideas and passion, and seems to be a real achiever, not just a talker, but he seems to believe
that he can do it all himself” with the other three I have suggested we have a start we just need a few more good people to come forward………..as I said 4 down 6 to go!
I think that if we get a few with some go about them we are right, we need people who want to have ago and as Darryl Stewart has written about the CV’s and employment history we need quality with proven history.
I have read with interest the CV’s in the paper and not many have done to much for me!
Thanks for your time my crew looks forward to reading the posts in the next few months!

  1. It is with much sadness that I read The Bayside Basher’s post. What he/she alludes to is just more of the same, where have most of these people been over the last four years? I don’t remmember hearing a peep out of any of them. Suddenly, at election time where start to hear the same old, same old crap.

Council is a business, a big business, our biggest business, it’s sole aim should be about getting the best value for our rateing dollar for the most residents. To date all I have heard is the old pie in the sky ideas.

Until this region decides what it wants to be, nothing will ever change, sadly this is not helped by the ongoing feud between some Maryborough and Hervey Bay residents.

Until we all think about US and not ME we will just slowly die.

  2. Sadly I don’t think reintroducing divisions will in any way help with the us and them problem. Amazed at how critical people are of the candidates. At least there are a few that have real world experience compared to the current members. Maybe some of these nameless and faceless experts could put their hands up. To answer your question John as why I have been quiet over the last 4 years, well I haven’t . Anyone that knows me will attest to how I am always speaking out about what could be done. I just do it one on one as I work around 60hrs a week, study and am heavily involved in the swimming club so I don’t have much time for blogs and websites.

  3. I am surprised at John Neve’s post. I thought Mr Neve attended lots of meetings and functions. It appears that it is only the council meetings in the council chambers that Mr Neve attends. According to Mr Neve’s post there is NOBODY capable of being a councillor.

Those candidates that I mentioned, and Bayside Basher seems to mostly agree with, are people that have been out there in the community, actually “doing it” not just talking about doing it. Yes there are MANY johny-come-latelys trying to get a good paying job by pretending to be all-caring all-knowing.

Mr Neve must have been hiding under a rock if he has not been aware of the efforts of people like Darryl Stewart, Darren Everard, Lance Stone, Trevor MacDonald and Stuart Taylor over recent times. All have worked tirelessly in their own time to achieve benefits for the whole community.

  4. Wade,
To the best of my knowledge we have never met and you could be a very nice person,
sadly most of our past councillors have been nice people. We don’t need nice, we need thinkers with vision.

Don’t, please don’t take this personally, but you and many of the candidates to date, I have never heard of! I read all I can, speak to many people attend most open forums
drink in pubs, clubs and eat out. Did not know you existed until recent weeks! Those candidates I do know about are putting out the same old, same old, sorry but nothing is going to change until we get some forward looking thinkers.

  5. Frasercoastbarfly,
Firstly I have not attended a council meeting in a long time, secondly I know three of those you mention personally and spoken to one in the last few days, your point is?
As to whether they have worked “tirelessly” I could not comment.

The fact is, nothing has changed and it won’t until we get people who tell it as it is.
Fact, the people chose their best, “safe hands”, track record, nice people, experienced
and having done that have whinged ever since!

Come on, wake up some thing is wrong here and comment like yours will not fix it.

  6. My point is John, that you stated:
“It is with much sadness that I read The Bayside Basher’s post. What he/she alludes to is just MORE OF THE SAME, where have most of these people been over the last four years? I don’t remmember hearing a peep out of ANY OF THEM. Suddenly, at election time where start to hear the same old, SAME OLD CRAP.”
    My emphasis added.

That can only be interpreted as saying that ALL the candidates mentioned are MORE OF THE SAME – implying they are the same as the existing councillors, that not ANY OF THEM have been doing ANYthing, and that they are speaking/writing the SAME OLD CRAP.

    You also state:
“As to whether they have worked “tirelessly” I could not comment.”
But you did John. You did comment. you stated very clearly for all to see that there has not been a peep out of any of them!

John, the fact that you might have met some of them once or twice does not mean that you “know them personally”. I actually DO know them personally. If you did “know them personally” then you would know that the ones I mentioned do have what it takes to be good councillors. They not only work tirelessly for the benefit of the people of this region, but they also have good business heads, are proven achievers, can understand finances and balance a budget, can look at the big picture and make strategic decisions, and are not afraid to make tough calls. They are even well educated and literate which makes a huge different from some councillors of the past!

So John, what is your answer? Who is a good candidate? Who should people vote for? The only thing I can glean from all your writings, and I have read lots and lots over many many years, is that there is not one candidate, and never has been, who is worthy of a vote. Apart from yourself of course.
    What a sad negative existence.

    To quote yourself:
“Come on, wake up some thing is wrong here and comment like yours will not fix it.”

  7. No offense taken John. We must just move in different circles. Most business owners in Hervey Bay would know me. I don’t go to pubs and after attending, Business drinks, Chamber of Commerce, BNI and other such groups I decided not a lot happens at these meetings and I was far better off working and doing something then having a meeting about it.

To answer your question I don’t consider myself a nice person. If i’m employed to do a job I do it. If your in my way then you won’t get the impression i’m a nice person trust me. I have had loyal customers throughout my real estate and buliding career because i’m good at what I do, not because i’m a nice person. Everyone seems to be focusing on candidates that do a lot of community service. That is not running a business. To move this region on we need more than volunteer skills and one of the candidates (that I fully support) is actually being paid for a lot of the work he is doing through a government grant. We need people that are used to dealing and negotiating with people over a vast array of industires and focus areas. I agree with you toatally about nice people. I met a lot of them in 10 years of Real Estate and while I enjoy there company they simply don’t get the job done.

Council is a business and it needs to be run like one. It’s not a gathering place for nice people who want to develop a nice big fluffy retirement village. It need action and it needs it now.

  8. Frasercoastbarfly,

What interpretation you put on my words is up to you, however what I stated is very plain. Regarding my “knowing them personally”, just ask them, and as stated I won’t comment on their abilities to be councillors, the electorate will do that.
As to working “tirelessly”, just how could you know their limits?
As to councillors past and present, based on your post, you and those of your thinking are happy! I must be the only one in this region in your view who isn’t!

But to make the issue very clear, to date none of the candidates light my fire.
